The French use the term vin aigre - sour wine, which is very appropriate considering how vinegar was discovered. It was discovered 10,000 years ago when a cask of wine was discovered to be past its time and had turned sour.
Vinegar was used as a preservative and condiment by ancient Babylonians.
The Romans used it as a beverage (they must have been desperate for something to drink). Cleopatra used it to dissolve preious pearls in order to win a wager. The Greeks used it to pickle meats. And finally, when Hannibal, a great general, crossed the Alps with an army riding elephants it was used to crack and dissolve boulders that obstructed thier way.
